Is there a way to get rid of the white background and make it transparent? Or is this something that can't be done in Paint?

I don't believe transparent backgrounds are an option in Paint. You'll need to use PS or PSP to do that, I think.

you can make selections with transparent backgrounds, but that's it i'm afraid.
