for these avatars (made in PSP) I cut out some TOS pics using the freehand selection tool, cleaned them up with the eraser, and went over the jagged outline of the images with the soften tool. I colour picked from each of the uniforms and filled another layer with that colour and sprayed over it with the air brush using a slightly different shade. i then cut and pasted the layers together, fiddled with the opacity and added the text and border.
